한국항공우주산업(KAI)은 사천 본사 우주센터에 위성체 시험용 대형 열진공시설(Thermal Vacuum Chamber)을 구축했다고 1일 밝혔다.

이는 그동안 항공우주연구원(KARI)에만 있던 대형 열진공챔버가 민간 기업에 설치된 첫 사례다.이번에 완공된 시설은 지름 5.7m,길이 6m 크기로 국내에서 두 번째로 큰 규모다.

KAI는 이번 위성 시험용 대형 챔버 설치로 초소형 위성에서부터 정지궤도 기상위성 및 항법위성(KPS) 등 3.5~4톤급 대형위성까지 우주환경시험이 가능한 독보적인 우주사업 인프라를 보유하게 됐다.

특히,2022 야구 플레이오프 일정초소형 SAR위성 대량생산을 위한 동시 시험 체계 기반을 마련했다는 평가다.대형 열진공 챔버는 이달 중 초소형위성체계개발사업 SAR검증위성(K모델)의 궤도환경(고온·저온·진공) 시험을 시작으로 운영에 본격 착수한다.

향후 전자파시험 시설을 추가 확보해 명실상부 설계부터 제작 및 환경시험에 이르는 위성개발 전체 프로세스를 One Site(한 곳)에서 할 수 있는 우주센터를 완비할 계획이다.

이를 통해 국내 위성 소요확대와 위성 수출 등을 대응하기 위한 양산체계를 확보하고 개발 효율 향상과 저비용화를 기반으로 글로벌 경쟁력을 강화시킬 것으로 기대된다.

강구영 KAI 사장은 "정부 주도의 기술 발전이 민간 주도로 이전되고 있는 뉴스페이스 시대를 맞이해 KAI도 독자적인 역량 확보를 위한 투자를 지속 확대할 것"이라며 "금번 설치한 열진공챔버 시설을 위성개발 스타트업,2022 야구 플레이오프 일정대학교 등에서 활용할 수 있도록 해 우주산업 상생 및 생태계 강화에도 앞장서겠다"고 말했다.
