SK온은 24일(현지 시각) 미국 라스베이거스에서 열린‘패스트마켓 콘퍼런스’에서 엑손모빌과 리튬 공급에 관한 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다고 26일 발표했다.

이 협약은 SK온에게 엑손모빌이 아칸소주 리튬염호에서 생산한 리튬을 최대 10만t 공급하는 내용을 담고 있다.공급 시기와 물량은 본 계약 체결 후 확정될 예정이다.

엑손모빌은 미국 최대 석유기업으로 배터리 핵심 소재 사업에 진출하기 위해 아칸소 염호를 인수했다.이 염호에는 전기차 5000만 대 분량의 배터리를 생산할 수 있는 리튬이 매장돼 있다.엑손모빌은 2030년부터 연간 전기차 100만 대 분량의 리튬을 공급할 계획이다.

박종진 SK온 전략구매담당 부사장은 북미 지역 소비자 이익을 보장하기 위해 핵심광물 확보에 노력하겠다고 밝혔다.댄 암만 엑손모빌 저탄소솔루션 사업 사장은 SK온과의 협력이 에너지 안보 강화와 제조업 활성화에 기여할 것이라고 말했다.
