(서울=연합뉴스) 이승연 기자 = 한국을 대표하는 조선·철강 5개사가 액화수소 운반선 화물창(저장탱크) 연구를 위한 협력에 나섰다.

삼성중공업은 최근 HD한국조선해양,써벨로 로드한화오션,써벨로 로드포스코,현대제철,써벨로 로드한국선급(KR)과 액화수소 선박용 재료 시험 표준화 공동연구를 위한 업무협약을 체결했다고 13일 밝혔다.

차세대 친환경 에너지로 꼽히는 수소는 영하 253도에서 냉각해 800분의 1로 압축한 액체 상태로 운반된다.

이때 액화수소 운반선의 핵심은 액화수소가 보관되는 화물창을 초극저온 상태로 안전하게 유지하는 기술이다.

조선·철강 5개사와 한국선급은 초극저온에서 선박 재료의 충격 인성(견디는 성질)이 상온보다 낮아지는 만큼 다양한 재료의 물성 연구가 필요하다는 인식을 공유해 이번 업무협약을 체결했다.

협약을 통해 이들은 초극저온 환경에서의 재료 물성 변화 데이터 및 실험 결과를 공유하고,써벨로 로드액화수소 화물창 설계의 국제 표준화를 추진하기로 했다.

이를 통해 한국이 차세대 수소 운반선 시장을 선점할 수 있는 기술적 토대를 마련할 수 있을 것으로 보고 있다.

협약에 참여한 한 조선사 연구소장은 "한국선급을 비롯해 국내 대형 조선 3사와 철강 2사가 공동 연구를 진행하는 만큼 이번 공동 협력이 한국 기업의 미래 수소 운반선 시장 주도권 확보에 크게 기여하게 될 것"이라고 말했다.
