일제강점기 때 뚫린 영월의 옛 텅스텐광산입니다.

당시 세계 텅스텐 생산량의 10%를 차지했습니다.

그러다 채산성 악화로 1992년 채굴이 중단됐습니다.

끝없이 길게 이어진 광산 터널.

벽을 따라 반짝이는 광맥이 보입니다.

반도체 산업의 필수 광물인 텅스텐입니다.

앞으로 60년은 캘 수 있는 양입니다.

암석 속 텅스텐 함량도 0.44%로,세계 평균의 2배가 넘습니다.

광산 재개발이 시작된 건 3년 전.

광산 터를 정비하고,주변 도로도 보완했습니다.

내년부턴 상업적인 채굴을 시작할 계획입니다.

텅스텐 선광 공장이 들어서는 자립니다.

광석 원물이 나오면 이곳에서 그 안에 담긴 텅스텐을 추출해 고함량의 정광을 만들어 냅니다.

연계 사업도 추진됩니다.

25만 제곱미터 규모의 첨단산업 핵심소재 산업단지 조성이 대표적입니다.

또,로또 조작 신고석탄 경석 활용도 추진되고 있습니다.

폐광 이후 침체 일로를 걷고 있는 폐광지.
