도쿄 지요다구에 세워진 야스쿠니신사는 1867년의 메이지 유신을 전후해 일본에서 벌어진 내전과 일본이 일으킨 여러 침략전쟁에서 일왕을 위해 목숨을 바친 246만 6000여 명의 영령을 떠받드는 시설이다.

이 가운데 약 90%는 일본의 태평양전쟁(1941~1945년)과 연관돼 있다.전쟁에 책임이 있는 A급 전범 14명이 1978년 합사 의식을 거쳐 야스쿠니에 봉안됐다.

이 때문에 일본의 현직 총리나 각료가 야스쿠니 신사에 참배하면 일본이 침략전쟁을 반성하지 않는다는 뜻으로 해석돼 주변국들이 반발하는 등 큰 외교적 문제가 되어 왔다.
