일론 머스크 테슬라 최고경영자(CEO)가 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령의 선거운동에 유례를 찾기 어려운 거액을 기부하기로 했다.

월스트리트저널(WSJ)은 15일(현지시간) 소식통을 인용해 머스크가 트럼프 전 대통령의 선거운동을 돕는 슈퍼팩(super PAC·특별정치활동위원회)에 매달 4500만 달러(약 623억원)를 기부할 계획이라고 보도했다.

만약 머스크가 7월부터 대선 직전인 10월까지 매달 기부금을 낸다면 총액은 1억8000만 달러(약 2495억원)에 이르게 된다.

WSJ은 머스크가 계획한 기부금의 규모는 보기 드물 정도로 거액이라고 평가했다.

지금껏 올해 대선과 관련한 기부금 중 최고액은 미국의 재벌 가문인 멜런가의 종손이 트럼프 선거운동 슈퍼팩에 기부한 5000만 달러(약 693억원)로 알려졌다.

머스크가 기부금을 낼 단체는 아메리카PAC이다.

이 단체는 머스크 외에도 소프트웨어 업체인 팔란티어 테크놀로지스의 공동창업자인 조 론스데일과 대형 석탄업체 얼라이언스 리소스 파트너스의 조 크래프트 CEO 등 미국 재계 인사들을 후원자로 두고 있다.

수백명의 직원을 고용하고 있는 아메리카PAC은 올해 대선에서 주요 경합주의 트럼프 지지자들을 상대로 유권자 등록과 우편 투표 등을 종용하는 캠페인을 벌이고 있다.

앞서 머스크는 지난 3월 엑스(X·옛 트위터)를 통해 올해 대선에서 정치자금을 기부하지 않겠다는 입장을 밝혔다.
