미국 방문 시 비자 대신 발급 받는 전자여행허가(ESTA)를 신청했다가 과다한 수수료를 결제했다는 피해 사례가 늘고 있다.

한국소비자원은 11일 ESTA 신청 대행 사이트들에 대한 주의보를 발령했다.

ESTA는 90일 이내 관광 등의 목적으로 미국 방문 시 무비자로도 미국 입국·체류를 허용하는 비자 면제 제도다.

소비자 A씨는 미국 방문 전 ESTA 신청을 위해 포털 사이트에‘ESTA 신청’이라고 검색했다.그는 화면 상단에 뜬 사이트에 접속해 135달러(18만6500원)의 수수료를 내고 ESTA 신청을 마쳤다.그러나 A씨는 본인이 이용한 사이트가 미국 국토안보부에서 운영하는 공식 사이트가 아니라는 사실을 알게 됐고 이후 운영자에게 환불을 요구했으나 거부당했다.

소비자원은 이 같은 피해 사례가 이달까지 모두 8건 접수됐다고 전했다.피해자 모두 유사 사이트를 공식 홈페이지로 착각해 피해를 본 사례였다.

이들 대행 사이트는 사이트명에‘공식’(official)이나‘ESTA’같은 문구를 사용해 소비자가 오인하게끔 한 뒤 공식 홈페이지 발급 수수료 21달러(2만9017원)보다 4~6배 많은 98~145달러(13만5416~20만361원)를 청구했다.

특히 구글에서 ESTA를 검색한 소비자들의 피해가 많았다고 소비자원은 파악했다.

반면 구글의 경우‘광고’라는 명시 없이‘스폰서’문구와 함께 대행 사이트가 최상단에 노출되고 이들 사이트 밑으로 공식홈페이지가 위치해 있다.

소비자원은 대행업체를 통하지 않고도 공식 홈페이지를 통해 쉽게 ESTA를 신청할 수 있다고 말했다.공식 홈페이지는 https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov다.

소비자원은 구글 측에 광고 사이트를 하단으로 내리는 등 소비자 피해 예방 조치를 요구할 방침이다.
