최근 미국 전자여행허가(ESTA)를 해외 대행 사이트를 통해 발급받고 과다한 수수료를 지불했다는 소비자 피해가 잇따르고 있는 것으로 파악됐다.공식 홈페이지를 통한 수수료보다 6배 이상 지불한 사례도 있어 소비자원은 주의를 당부했다.

11일 한국소비자원에 따르면 올해 들어 '국제거래소비자포털'에 ESTA와 관련한 소비자 상담이 총 8건 접수됐다.해당 8건 모두 인터넷 포털사이트에서 ESTA 등을 검색했을 때 노출된 해외 대행 사이트에 접속해 피해를 본 사례다.피해자들은 대행 사이트를 미국 국토안보부가 운영하는 공식 홈페이지로 착각한 것으로 확인됐다.

소비자원에 따르면 해당 사이트는 사이트명에 '공식' 등의 문구를 사용하거나 국토안보부 운영 홈페이지와 유사한 구성으로 소비자의 오인을 유발했다.

공개된 사례를 보면 포털사이트에서 'ESTA 신청'이라고 검색한 뒤 화면 상단에 노출된 홈페이지에 접속해 발급받았다는 A씨는 개인정보 등을 입력하고 미화 135달러 (약18만7000원)를 결제했다.공식 홈페이지를 통해 신청할 때 내는 수수료 21달러의 6배 이상 지불한 셈이다.

소비자원은 국내 포털사이트보다 구글 검색에서 피해를 보는 사례가 많은 것으로 파악했다.구글에서 검색하면 광고 사이트가 상단에 노출되면서다.소비자원은 공식 홈페이지와 광고 사이트 간 구역 구분,스테이크카지노음영 등이 제공되지 않아 일반 소비자들이 명확히 구분하기 쉽지 않다고 지적했다.

이에 소비자원은 구글에 소비자 피해 예방을 위한 조치를 요구할 계획이라고 밝혔다.소비자에게는 ESTA 신청 시 미 정부가 운영하는 공식 사이트인지 반드시 확인하고 이용해 줄 것을 당부했다.
