(대전=연합뉴스) 박주영 기자 = 버려지는 열을 활용해 100만분의 1의 에너지로도 작동할 수 있는 반도체 소자가 개발됐다.

한국과학기술원(KAIST)은 신소재공학과 김경민 교수 연구팀이 산화물 반도체의 열-전기 상호작용을 활용한 열 컴퓨팅(Thermal computing) 기술을 개발했다고 25일 밝혔다.

반도체 소자에서 발생하는 열은 에너지 소모를 늘리고 반도체의 정상적인 동작을 방해해 문제가 된다.

열 발생을 최소화하는 것이 반도체 기술의 관건인데,발로란트 능력 월드컵연구팀은 오히려 애물단지로 여겨지던 열을 컴퓨팅에 활용하는 방법을 제안했다.

열-전기 상호작용이 강한 '모트 전이(Mott transition) 반도체'(온도에 따라 부도체에서 도체로 전기적 특성이 변하는 반도체) 소자를 활용했다.

낮은 열 전도도와 높은 비열을 가진 폴리이미드 기판(기계적 강도와 내열성이 우수한 폴리머 소재) 위에 모트 전이 반도체 소자를 제작,발로란트 능력 월드컵모트 전이 반도체 소자에서 발생한 열이 폴리이미드 기판에 저장될 수 있도록 했다.

이렇게 저장된 열은 일정 시간 유지되는 동시에 공간적으로도 전파되며 시간적·공간적 정보의 역할을 한다.

이 같은 방식으로 열 저장과 열 전달 기능을 최적화해 컴퓨팅을 수행,발로란트 능력 월드컵중앙처리장치(CPU)나 그래픽처리장치(GPU) 등 디지털 프로세스의 100만분의 1 수준 에너지만으로도 '경로 찾기'와 같은 복잡한 문제를 푸는 데 성공했다.

김경민 교수는 "단순히 전기 신호만 사용하던 컴퓨팅 기술은 이제 한계에 이르렀다"며 "인공지능(AI) 발전으로 대두되고 있는 컴퓨팅 에너지 문제를 해결할 수 있는 초저전력 컴퓨팅 기술"이라고 연구 의의를 설명했다.

미국 샌디아 국립연구소와 공동으로 진행한 이번 연구 결과는 국제 학술지 '네이처 머티리얼즈'(Nature Materials) 지난 18일 자에 실렸다.
