14일(현지시간) 로이터통신은 쿠웨이트석유공사(KPC)가 파일라카섬 동쪽 알누키타 해상유전에서 면적 96㎢로 추정되는 매장 지대를 발견했다고 보도했다.

로이터통신에 따르면 KPC는 “거대한 유전을 발견했다”고 밝혔다.96㎢는 여의도의 33배 크기다.셰이크 마슈알 알아마드 알자베르 알살바 국왕도 이를 보고받았다.

KPC는 해당 지대에 경질유 21억배럴,야구 막대풍선천연가스 5조1000억표준입방피트(SCF)가 매장돼 있다고 추정했다.천연가스를 석유로 환산하면 전체 추정 매장량은 32억배럴이다.

셰이크 나와프 사우드 나시르 알 살바 KPC 최고경영자(CEO)는 본인의 X(엑스)에 “새로 발견한 지역의 매장량은 3년 치 국가 전체 생산량과 맞먹는다”고 적었다.

KPC는 가능한 빨리 실제 생산을 시작하기 위한 계획을 세울 방침이다.

쿠웨이트는 전 세계 석유 매장량 6위,야구 막대풍선생산량 10위권의 국가다.현재 하루 평균 248만배럴의 원유를 생산하고 있다.2035년까지 하루 생산량을 400만배럴로 늘릴 계획이다.
