오세훈 서울시장이 최근 논란이 된 '광화문 100m 높이 태극기'에 대한 입장을 밝혔다.

7일 오 시장은 KBS 일요진단 라이브에 출연해 광화문 태극기 조감도와 관련 "비율을 생각하지 않고 설명을 쉽게 하기 위해 만든 자료라서 오해가 생겼다"며 "설계 공모를 하게 되면 훨씬 가늘고,버밍엄 대 미들즈브러광화문 광장의 디자인이 깨지지 않는다"고 설명했다.

과도한 비용이 들어간다는 지적에 대해서는 "게양대 하나 만드는 데 110억원이 아니라 그 밑에 여러가지 부대시설들이 있다"며 "조만간 직접 설명을 드릴 것"이라고 했다.

또 해당 사업을 추진한 배경에 대해서는 "광화문 광장은 국가의 상징 공간"이라며 "세종대왕과 이순신 장군 동상 등 조선시대 인물들은 민주공화국 상징을 나타내기 어렵다.국가 상징 공간으로서의 면모를 갖추기 위한 장치가 필요하다는 발생에서 시작됐다"고 밝혔다.

앞서 서울시는 광화문 광장에 100m 높이의 초대형 태극기 계양대를 설치하겠다는 구상을 밝힌 바 있다.이를 두고 애국주의·국가주의 발상이라는 논란이 일었다.
