(서울=연합뉴스) 이재영 기자 = 장동언 신임 기상청장은 "기후변화 감시·예측 총괄기관으로 국가 기후위기 대응 역량을 키울 수 있도록 선도적인 역할을 하겠다"고 1일 밝혔다.

장 청장은 이날 취임사에서 "기상청이 과거 성과에만 안주한다면 기후위기 대응 파수꾼 역할을 충실히 해나가기 어려운 환경에 놓일 것"이라면서 이같이 말했다.

그는 "기상청은 중앙행정기관이지만 기본적으로 기술 조직으로 국민 요구에 부응할 만큼 과학적 지식과 기술을 토대가 갖춰져야 한다"면서 "이에 걸맞게 투자하고 인력을 양성하겠다"고 강조했다.

또 "위험기상과 지진에서 국민 안전을 지키는 일이 기상청 제일의 가치"라면서 "예보 정확도를 높이는 노력은 물론이고 동시에 정확히 표현하도록 노력해 국민의 시각에서 가치가 있는 기상서비스를 만들겠다"고 약속했다.

16대 기상청장에 오른 장 청장은 미국 항공우주국(NASA) 연구원으로 일한 뒤 기상청에 기상연구관으로 입사해 수치모델개발과장,파워볼 수동기상서비스진흥국장,파워볼 수동지진화산국장,파워볼 수동기획조정관,파워볼 수동차장 등 요직을 두루 거쳤다.
