미국 뉴욕경찰(NYPD) 최초로 경무관급 한인 고위 간부가 나왔다.

27일(현지시간) NYPD와 뉴욕 한국총영사관에 따르면 NYPD의 허정윤 총경(Inspector)이 한국의 경무관에 해당하는 계급(Deputy Chief)으로 승진한다.허 총경은 28일 진급식에서 새 보직을 받을 예정이다.

데퓨티 치프는 일선 경찰서를 책임지는 총경보다 한 등급 높은 직급으로,스페치아 대 몬차한국의 경무관과 유사한 고위 간부직이다.계급장도 총경을 상징하는 '독수리'에서 군의 장성급과 같은 별 1개로 바뀐다.

NYPD의 전체 인원은 약 3만6000명으로 이 중 경무관 이상은 약 150~200명에 해당한다.

허 총경은 1960년대 경상남도 진해에서 태어나 부산에서 초·중·고등학교를 나온 뒤 부산여대를 졸업했다.

1998년 NYPD의 한인 첫 여성 경관으로 임용된 그는 맨해튼과 퀸스 등 한인 거주 지역에서 근무하면서 경력을 쌓았다.2022년 한인 최초로 경정으로 승진한 데 이어 2023년 말 한인 최초 총경으로 승진했다.

이번 승진은 총경 승진 결정 후 약 6개월 만이다.
