엔비디아 로고 <사진=로이터 연합뉴스>중국에 대한 수출이 금지된 미국의 첨단 반도체가 유학생을 통해 중국으로 흘러 들어가고 있는 것으로 확인됐다고 2일(현지시간) 월스트리트저널(WSJ)이 보도했다.

중국 반도체 밀수업자가 미국 대학 측 인맥을 동원해 중국인 유학생을 섭외하면 해당 유학생은 반도체를 짐가방에 담아 공항을 통과하는 방식이다.

반도체 하나는 닌텐도 게임 콘솔 정도의 크기이며 유학생들은 반도체를 운반하며 반도체 하나당 100달러의 수수료를 지급받는다.

WSJ에 따르면 이 같은 방식으로 수출이 제한된 엔비디아 반도체를 온라인에서 공개적으로 판매하는 업체만 70곳 이상 확인된다.

이들 중 25곳에 직접 연락을 취해본 결과 다수의 업체가 매달 수십 개의 첨단 엔비디아 반도체를 공급하고 있다고 밝힌 것으로 전해졌다.

이들 업체는 중국의 주요 테크 기업들의 수요를 만족시킬 정도는 아니지만 인공지능(AI) 관련 스타트업이나 연구소 등에는 충분한 대체 공급처가 되고 있다고 WSJ은 전했다.

한편 미국의 엄격한 반도체 수출 금지 조치로 중국 내에서 엔비디아 반도체 밀수 시장이 형성되고 있는 상황이다.

앞서 지난 2022년 8월 미 상무부는 엔비디아에 AI용 첨단 반도체 A100과 그 업그레이드 버전인 H100의 중국 수출을 금지한 바 있다.

이에 엔비디아는 중국 수출용 저사양 버전인 A800과 H800을 내놓았지만 미 정부는 작년 10월 그마저 수출을 금지했다.
