삼성전자 갤럭시S24가 포문을 연 인공지능(AI) 스마트폰 시장 경쟁이 뜨겁다.특히 올 하반기는 시장 주도권을 놓치 않으려는 삼성의 수성과 챗GPT라는 든든한 지원군을 갖춘 애플의 공세가 본격적으로 충돌하는 중대한 시기다.이 때문에 이달 출시되는 갤럭시Z6 시리즈에 거는 기대감이 어느 때보다 무겁다.

글로벌 스마트폰 전장은 하드웨어에서 AI로 옮겨갔다.2027년에는 전체 스마트폰 43%가 AI폰이다.삼성전자는 기민하게 움직여 AI폰 시장 선점에 성공했다.하지만 아너와 비보 등 중국 기업의 거센 추격과 애플의 첫 AI폰 아이폰16까지 언제든 판도 변화가 가능한 시기다.

시장에서는 애플이 AI폰을 내놓는 올 3분기까지를 삼성이 AI폰 시장에서 굳건한 입지를 다질 수 있는 골든타임으로 보고 있다.삼성은 이번에 출시하는 갤럭시Z6 시리즈를 포함해 올해에만 1억대가 넘는 기기에 갤럭시AI를 탑재해 단단한 AI폰 생태계를 구축하겠다는 수성 전략을 세웠다.

애플의 AI 전략은 다소 기대에 못 미쳤다는 평가가 지배적이다.지난달 세계개발자회의(WWDC)에서 자체 AI 시스템 '애플 인텔리전스'를 공개했지만 기술만 놓고 보면 새로운 내용은 없었다.전반적으로 삼성전자 갤럭시 AI 기능과 유사한 수준이다.

삼성으로선 모바일 AI 기술 격차를 벌릴 수 있는 기회를 놓치지 말아야 한다.폴더블에 최적화된 갤럭시 AI를 선보이겠다고 공언한 만큼 시장 기대도 크다.앞서 갤럭시Z4·Z5에도 AI 통역 등 기본적 AI 기능이 제공됐지만 바형 제품과 차별점은 없었다.

기존 AI 기능 고도화도 중요하지만 기술 우위 확보 기회를 살리려면 퍼스트 무버에 걸맞은 신기능 추가가 이뤄져야 한다.웨어러블 디바이스까지 갤럭시 에코 생태계에 AI 기능을 확장하고 폼팩터 장점을 살린 혁신 기능이 담겨야 한다.폴더블과 AI 모두 초격차를 실현할 수 있는 마지막 찬스다.
