입양과 임시 보호 등을 이유로 데려온 11마리의 고양이와 강아지를 살해한 혐의로 구속기소 된 20대 남성에게 집행유예가 선고됐다.검찰은 이 남성에게 동물보호법 최고 형량인 징역 3년을 구형한 바 있다.

25일 동물권행동 '카라'에 따르면 의정부지방법원 고양지원 형사1단독 이상엽 판사는 동물보호법 위반 혐의로 구속돼 재판에 넘겨진 20대 남성 안모씨에게 징역 1년 6개월에 집행유예 3년을 선고했다.더불어 보호관찰과 사회봉사 480시간도 명령했다.

재판부는 "(피고인이) 범행을 자백했고,1인용 고스톱경찰에서도 증거를 제시하며 혐의 모두 유죄가 인정된다"면서도 "반성하는 태도가 있고 형사처벌 전력이 없는 점을 종합했다"고 양형 이유를 밝혔다.

앞서 안씨는 지난 4월 반려동물 입양 플랫폼을 통해 강아지 5마리 고양이 6마리를 입양했다.이후 이들 모두 죽음에 이르게 한 혐의를 받는다.

안씨는 입양 과정에서 전화번호를 바꿔가며 새로운 동물을 연이어 입양했고 원 보호자가 동물의 안부를 묻자 그는 동물을 잃어버렸다고 거짓말한 것으로 전해졌다.안씨는,1인용 고스톱경찰 수사를 받던 와중에도 고양이를 추가로 입양한 것으로 드러났다.

사건을 고발한 카라는 구속돼 법정 최고형을 구형받은 안씨를 집행유예로 풀어준 것은 '역대 최악의 동물 학대 선고'라며 강력히 규탄했다.

카라 윤성모 활동가는 "동물 학대 사건은 피해당한 동물이 고소할 수 없어 제3자에 의한 형사고발이 주를 이룬다.항소 역시 검사의 결정을 요청해야 하는 현실"이라며 "항소요구서를 검사 측에 제출했다.검사의 신속한 항소 결정을 촉구한다"고 말했다.
