SK온은 지난 24일(현지시각) 미국 라스베이거스에서 열린 세계 최대 규모의 리튬∙배터리 관련 행사‘패스트마켓 콘퍼런스’에서 엑손모빌(Exxon Mobil)과 리튬 공급 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다고 26일 밝혔다.

이번 MOU를 통해 SK온은 엑손모빌이 아칸소(Arkansas)주(州) 리튬염호에서 직접리튬추출(DLE) 기술을 사용해 생산한 리튬을 최대 10만t 공급받게 된다.구체적인 공급 시기와 물량은 본 계약 체결 후 확정된다.

미국 최대 석유기업 엑손모빌은 배터리 핵심 소재 사업 진출을 위해 지난해 초 아칸소 염호를 인수,서비스 정책같은 해 11월 리튬 채굴을 개시했다.염호에는 전기차 5000만대 분량의 배터리를 생산할 수 있는 400만t 규모의 리튬(탄산리튬 환산 기준)이 매장된 것으로 추정된다.엑손모빌은 2030년부터 연간 전기차 100만대 분량의 리튬을 공급하겠다는 목표다.

DLE 기술은 염수에서 흡착 등을 통해 리튬을 직접 추출하는 공법이다.경암(硬岩·폭약을 써서 채굴하는 단단한 암석) 채굴 방식보다 탄소 배출량이 적어 친환경적이다.초기 설비 투자 비용이 크지만,염호에서 소금물을 증발시켜 리튬을 얻는 기존 방식 대비 생산 기간이 짧아 생산성이 높고 물 사용량이 적다는 것이 장점이다.

SK온이 원자재 수급을 위해 직접 움직이는 것은 인플레이션 감축법(IRA),서비스 정책EU 핵심원자재법(CRMA) 등 글로벌 산업 정책에 대응하기 위함이다.회사는 올해 2월 미국 웨스트워터와 천연 흑연 공급 구매 계약,2022년 11월 칠레 SQM과 리튬 공급 구매 계약을 체결했다.2019년 12월 스위스 글렌코어와도 코발트 구매 계약을 맺었다.

박 부사장은 “핵심 시장인 북미 지역 소비자 이익을 보장하기 위해 IRA 요건을 충족하는 핵심 광물 확보에 지속적으로 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
