(대전=연합뉴스) 박주영 기자 = 한국지질자원연구원은 안지환 박사 연구팀이 개발한 이산화탄소 직접공기포집(Direct Air Capture·DAC) 기술이 일론 머스크 재단의 '엑스프라이즈 탄소 제거(XPRIZE Carbon Removal) 프로젝트' DAC 100대 기술에 선정됐다고 4일 밝혔다.

DAC는 발전·산업 공정 등에서 발생하는 이산화탄소를 포집해 연료 등 경제적 가치를 지닌 제품을 생산하는 기술로,아시안컵 캘린더대기에서 이산화탄소를 물리·화학적으로 분리해 공기 중 이산화탄소 농도를 낮출 수 있다.

연구팀은 석탄재 폐기물을 활용해 DAC 기반 탄소 광물화 기술을 개발했다.

석탄재에서 공기 중 이산화탄소를 포집할 수 있는 제올라이트(무수히 많은 초미세한 구멍 구조를 가진 일종의 광물)를 합성하고,아시안컵 캘린더이산화탄소를 활용해 복합 탄산염을 제조하는 기술이다.

균일한 공극을 만들 수 있는 촉매기술을 적용해 이산화탄소에 대한 광물의 반응성을 높였다.

석탄화력발전소에서 버려지는 폐기물을 활용함으로써 경제성을 획기적으로 높일 수 있다고 연구팀은 설명했다.

2021년부터 진행한 이번 연구를 통해 파일럿 플랜트(시범 실증시설)를 구축,아시안컵 캘린더지난 5월 엑스프라이즈 탄소 제거 프로젝트의 세계를 변화시킬 DAC 100대 기술에 국내에서 유일하게 선정됐다.

또 석탄재에서 전략 광물인 희토류(희귀한 화학물질)를 회수하는 기술을 개발,아시안컵 캘린더유엔기후변화협약(UNFCCC)의 '신규 청정개발체제'(CDM) 방법론으로 등록되기도 했다.

안지환 박사는 "이번에 개발한 DAC 원천기술의 상용화를 통해 탄소 중립 실현과 기후 위기 대응에 기여할 것"이라고 말했다.
