미국인들의 '국가 주치의'로 불리는 미 의무총감이 사회관계망서비스(SNS)가 청소년 정신건강에 악영향을 미치고 있다며 이들 서비스에 술·담배처럼 관련 경고 문구를 표시해야 한다고 촉구했습니다.

비벡 머시 미 공중보건서비스단(PHSCC) 단장 겸 의무총감은 17일(현지시간) 뉴욕타임스(NYT) 기고에서 "SNS가 청소년의 정신건강에 심각한 위해를 미칠 수 있다는 의무총감 명의의 경고 표시를 SNS 플랫폼에 노출하도록 요구할 때가 됐다"라고 밝혔습니다.

머시 의무총감은 "젊은 세대의 정신건강 위기는 현재 비상 상황이며 SNS가 주된 요인으로 떠오르고 있다"면서 관련된 다양한 연구 결과를 소개했습니다.

"하루 3시간 이상 SNS를 사용하는 청소년은 불안과 우울증 증상 위험이 두 배나 높다"며 "지난해 여름 기준으로 이들 청소년 연령 그룹의 하루평균 SNS 사용 시간은 4.8시간이었다"라고 지적했습니다.

미국 의무총감의 권고는 시간이 지나 공중보건사의 전환점으로 기록되는 경우가 많습니다.

미국 내에서 판매되는 모든 술이나 담배에는 의무총감의 위험 경고 문구 표기가 의무화돼 있습니다.

경고 표시를 의무화하기 위해선 미 의회의 입법 절차가 필요합니다.

의무총감의 이번 권고로 미국 안팎에서 아동·청소년의 SNS 사용을 둘러싼 논란이 커질 전망입니다.

머시 의무총감은 앞서 지난해 5월에도 19페이지 분량의 주의보를 통해 SNS가 젊은 층,즐겁다 일본어특히 청소년기 여성의 정신건강에 심각한 위험이 될 수 있다는 경고를 내놓은 바 있습니다.
