고인은 1945년 6월 서울 동대문구에서 윤덕선 학교법인일송학원 설립자의 첫째 아들로 태어났다.용산고등학교를 졸업한 뒤 가톨릭의과대학에서 의학 석·박사를 마치고 1979년 미국 콜롬비아대학교 외과학교실에서 장기이식과 첨단의학을 연구한다.

1980년 귀국 후 한림대강남성심병원 외과에서 환자를 돌보며 1985년 한림대의료원 최초로 신장이식 수술에 성공했다.1987년에는 국내 최초로 췌장이식수술에 성공해 당뇨병 치료의 새로운 가능성을 제시하며 한국 의학 발전에 공헌했다.
