국내 최대 탄광…1950년 이후 9천400만t 생산

(세종=연합뉴스) 차대운 기자 = 대한석탄공사는 강원 태백 장성광업소가 오는 30일 폐광한다고 28일 밝혔다.

지난 2023년 전남 화순광업소가 먼저 폐광한 데 이어 장성광업소가 문을 닫게 돼 이제 석탄공사 산하의 국내 탄광은 도계광업소만 남게 된다.

도계광업소도 2025년 문을 닫고 석탄공사의 석탄 생산은 완전히 끝날 예정이다.

국내 최대 탄광이던 장성광업소는 일제 강점기인 1936년 개발을 시작한 이후 88년간 운영되며 우리나라 최대 규모의 석탄 생산지로서 국민 연료인 연탄의 원활한 수급 안정과 지역 경제 활성화에 기여했다.

1979년에는 228만t의 연간 최대 생산량을 달성했다.

1950년 석탄공사 창립 이후 장성광업소는 약 9천4백만t의 석탄을 생산했다.

1970년대 세계적인 석유 파동 이후에는 증산보국(甑山堡國)이라는 구호 아래 석탄 생산이 활발히 이뤄져 한때 약 6천명의 직원이 근무할 정도로 규모가 컸다.

김인수 사장직무대행은 "장성광업소는 우리나라가 본격적으로 경제 개발을 추진하던 시기 주요 에너지 공급원으로서 주어진 임무를 마치고 역사 속으로 사라지게 됐다"며 "어둡고 무더운 수백ｍ 지하 막장에서 우리 산업 발전의 원동력과 버팀목이 되어온 장성광업소 직원들의 특별한 희생과 헌신을 국민들께서 꼭 기억해 주시기를 부탁드린다"고 밝혔다.
