'서울시청 앞 역주행 교통사고' 가해 운전자 차모(68) 씨가 첫 경찰 조사에서 "사고 당시 브레이크를 밟았으나 딱딱했다"고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.차량 결함에 따른 급발진을 주장한 것이다.

서울 남대문경찰서는 4일 오후 2시 45분부터 4시 50분까지 차 씨를 상대로 피의자 조사를 실시했다고 밝혔다.차 씨가 사고 당시 부상으로 치료를 받고 있어 경찰 수사관이 직접 병원으로 가서 그를 조사한 것이다.

경찰 관계자는 "차 씨는 '사고 당시 브레이크를 밟았으나 딱딱했다'라며 차량 상태 이상에 따른 급발진을 주장했다"고 밝혔다.

현재 차 씨는 과실치사상 혐의로 입건된 상태다.그는 지난 1일 오후 9시 26분쯤 세종대로18길을 역주행하다가 보행자들을 들이받은 사고를 냈다.이 사고로 9명이 사망하고 5명이 부상을 입었다.

경찰은 차 씨에 대해 체포영장을 신청했으나 법원에서 기각당했다.법원은 "출석에 응하지 않을 이유가 있다거나 체포의 필요성 단정이 어렵다"고 기각 배경을 설명했다.

이와 관련 경찰 관계자는 "체포영장을 재청구할 계획은 없다"고 말했다.

한편 차 씨는 '100% 급발진'이라고 주장하고 있다.또 사고 당시 차에 함께 타고 있던 그의 아내도 참고인 조사에서 "제동장치가 안 들었다"고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.
