현대건설이 한국원자력연구원과 차세대 소형모듈원자로인‘소듐냉각고속로(SFR)’상용화를 위한 업무협약을 체결했다고 12일 밝혔다.

현대건설은 전날 서울 종로구 본사에서 한국원자력연구원과‘민관 합작 SFR 개발사업에 관한 업무협약’을 맺었다.윤영준 현대건설 사장과 주한규 한국원자력연구원 원장이 업무협약 서명식에 참석했다.

‘4세대 원자로’의 핵심 노형인 SFR은 고속 중성자를 이용해 핵분열을 일으키고,물이 아니라 액체 소듐(나트륨)을 냉각제로 사용하는 원자로다.사용한 핵연료를 재활용해 우라늄 이용률을 향상시키고,켈린 아코스타고준위방사성폐기물 양을 대폭 줄여 경제성·지속성·안전성이 뛰어나다는 평가다.

양측은 이번 협약을 계기로 SFR 기술 고도화·상용화 기반을 마련해 4세대 원자로의 산업 경쟁력을 강화한다는 목표다.이를 위해 개발사업,국내외 실증사업,켈린 아코스타수출 기반 상용화 및 수출에 대한 상호 독점적 사업 참여,공동연구 및 지식재산권 기술 이전 등 여러 분야에서 긴밀히 협력할 계획이다.
