임 청장은 남성현 전 산림청장 후임이다.임 청장은 또한 제32대부터 이어진 4번째 산림청 공직자 출신 청장이다.

그는 기술고시(32회)로 입직해 지난 26년간 산림산업정책국장,웰링턴 피닉스 fc산림보호국장,웰링턴 피닉스 fc기획조정관을 두루 거친 산림전문가로 꼽힌다.지난 2022년 8월부터 산림청 차장으로 재직했고 이번 정부인사에 따라 내부 승진해 청장으로 취임했다.

임 청장은 뛰어난 기획력와 빠른 추진력으로 산림정책 전환기마다 핵심 역할을 수행하며 리더십을 발휘했으며 현안 발생 시 해결사 역할을 자처해 오는 등 조직 내·외부 신뢰가 높다.또한 소탈하고 합리적인 성품으로 상하직원과 적극적으로 소통하며 조직 운영에도 강점을 보유하고 있다는 평이다.

임 청장은 이날 열린 취임식을 통해 "기후위기에 대한 관심과 우려가 깊어지며 산림정책에 대한 국민 눈높이가 다시 설정되고 있는 것을 체감한다"며 "유연한 자세와 합리적인 정책으로 산림을 사랑하는 국민과 임업인들에게 신뢰를 주는 기관이 될 수 있도록 하겠다"고 소감을 밝혔다.
